Fred Hayman Visionary Award: Bob and Leslie Spivak

The Spivak’s true visionary mindset has left a lasting impact on the restaurant and food industry in Beverly Hills and beyond. Bob Spivak is the co-founder, Chairman, and past president and chief executive officer of Grill Concepts, Inc., the group behind The Grill On The Alley, The Daily Grill, Public School, and many others. Bob with the incredible help from his wife Leslie, approach fine dining with a top-notch customer service mindset of “The answer is yes – now what is the question?”

Originally formed in 1984, and publicly held since 1995, Grill Concepts, Inc. currently operates 12 Daily Grill restaurants throughout Southern and Northern California, Washington, D.C., Maryland, Texas, and Washington State. In addition, there are six The Grill on the Alley restaurants, located in Beverly Hills CA, San Jose CA, Westlake Village CA, Chicago IL, Dallas TX, and Aventura FL. In the early 1980s, Bob, along with his two partners, Mike Weinstock and Richard Shapiro, opened the highly successful Beverly Hills restaurant, The Grill On the Alley, a traditional American grill with the by-words, “Quality Without Compromise.”  The Grill was inducted into the Fine Dining Hall of Fame by Nation’s Restaurant News in 1995.  Considered one of Los Angeles’ “power spots,” The Grill is the upscale model for the Daily Grill, a concept based on the high-quality food and service at a price point that reaches a far wider audience.

As industry veterans, both Bob and Leslie Spivak have paved the way for further economic and community growth by serving on many local, regional, and state boards and associations. Bob was the Chairman of the California Restaurant Association, Director and past chairman of the Board of Advisors for The Collins College of Hospitality Management at Cal Poly University Pomona and served on the Board of Directors for the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco.

Leslie Spivak has been involved in several community organizations including but not limited to Cedars-Sinai Health System, the Board of Women’s Leadership Network (JVS), and the Bellagio Road School. Leslie joined the Cedars-Sinai Board of Governors in 2003 and has since been an incredible asset to many of the hospital’s projects and programs. In 2016, Leslie Spivak became the Chair of Cedars-Sinai Board of Governors where they completed a $20,000,000 fundraise for “Stem Cell Research” during her term. Additionally, she has been instrumental in beginning and growing “Rock for Research,” an annual family event raising money for Cedars-Sinai Health System.
