The Beverly Hills Chamber Visits The Magic Castle Above Hollywood Boulevard
The Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce recently visited The Magic Castle for an intimate conversation about historic Los Angeles glamour, legacy, hospitality, architecture, and the enduring cultural connection between Hollywood and Beverly Hills.
Set at Franklin Avenue and Orange Drive, overlooking Hollywood Boulevard, The Magic Castle stands as one of Los Angeles’ most mysterious and iconic landmarks. Its presence feels deeply connected to the illumination of the city, from the Chateauesque jewel above Hollywood Boulevard to the legendary icons found moments away along Sunset Boulevard, including The Beverly Hills Hotel and Greystone Mansion.
Upon arrival, Chamber President & CEO Todd Johnson, Senior Vice President Blair Schlecter, and Chamber staff were warmly welcomed by Erika Larsen and Jessica Hopkins, President & COO of The Magic Castle. The duo steward an institution that has been closely tied to their family for generations, carrying forward a legacy of magic.
As we entered the vestibule, we approached the famed secret passage, opened only by speaking the secret phrase. Inside, the atmosphere immediately reflected the storied character. With a strict no-photography policy, the experience encourages guests to be fully present, preserving the mystery and intimacy that define the club.
After being shown the main bar and the layout of the historic mansion, we gathered for cocktails and conversation, speaking about the history imbued throughout the building, the Larsen family’s legacy, Hollywood’s golden-era mystique, and the natural connection between The Magic Castle and Beverly Hills.
The history of The Magic Castle is inseparable from the Larsen family. William W. Larsen Sr. and his wife, Gerrie, helped establish magic as a family legacy, later carried forward by their sons, Bill Larsen Jr. and Milt Larsen. In the early 1960s, the family transformed the historic mansion, built in 1908 by banker Rollin B. Lane on Franklin Avenue, into a private clubhouse dedicated to magic, performance, and theatrical hospitality.
Throughout the visit, every room revealed another layer of story. From custom bars crafted from stage floors to a gallery of magic photography, lithographs, prints, paintings, sculpture and hidden architectural details, the Castle feels designed to transport guests into a world of impossible dimension. Each room offers its own character, allowing performances to unfold in settings that feel eternal and timeless.
At the end of the visit, Erika and Jessica led our team into a private roundtable room, where the setting itself heightened the anticipation before an intimate card performance unfolded just for our group. What followed was an inexplicable display of skill, timing, and illusion that left our team in complete astonishment. From there, we were invited to wander the members-only club and experience carte blanche magic throughout the remainder of the evening.
There is a powerful alignment between The Magic Castle and Beverly Hills. Both are rooted in legacy, refinement, craftsmanship, and the arts. Beverly Hills continues to welcome high-level visitors from around the world, natural flâneurs, in search of beauty, elegance, and a storied journey.
As Beverly Hills continues to celebrate its cultural excellence, The Magic Castle remains a nearby abode of mystique, one that reflects the enduring spirit and imagination of Los Angeles.
