Your home theater should be a space where you can relax & unwind, entertain, and indulge in your favorite movies. It is a space for the whole family, friends and loved ones to come together and enjoy a little bit of luxury. In order to ensure the optimum viewing experience, there are several factors that are important to consider: this is your guide to the perfect home theater.

To note: In this instance, we are discussing a dedicated, purpose-built movie room. In our next post we will discover how to optimise your media or multi-purpose room for a cinematic experience. 

Home Theater: Lighting

The right lighting combinations can enhance your cinematic experience and is something that often doesn’t spring to mind when discussing watching a film in a dark room!  A movie room should never be pitch black as it will strain your eyes to watch the screen, so a subtle solution that adds just enough illumination to navigate around the room and avoid tripping, while not distracting from the screen is ideal.

Indirect lighting can be layered to suit the desired ambience of the room. LED down-lights as well as in-ceiling star lights and stair lights can be adjusted and combined to suit your atmosphere, whether it’s a more relaxed documentary prompting a conversational environment, or a full cinematic experience to watch the latest Marvel movie that requires full silence! It is certainly a feature worth investing in and planning with an integrator to create your perfect home theater.

Home Theater: Sound

The market is flooded with great sound system options for your dedicated home theatre room, from 5.1 surround sound to full Dolby Atmos. As well as turning on your audio-visual system, you can also adjust lighting and climate from your seat.

Using pre-set ‘scenes’ (a set combination of actions that the one push of a button will implement) your motorized screen drops, climate sets to the desired temperature, the lighting dims and the sound begins. Some systems even have features that should your phone ring, or any interruption electrically occurs on your end such as your Savant doorbell ringing, the film will pause and the lights will brighten, meaning you never miss a thing.

Home Theater: Climate control 

Similarly, to lighting, climate control is something that might not be at the forefront of your home theater vision but is one that fully makes the experience. No one wants to watch a movie in a cold room, and vice versa in the hotter summer months it’s important to have an environment that you can relax in without having to think about the temperature. Through your home automation set-up, you can pre-set your room from your control app, wall panel or remote to be the optimum temperature before you start your screening.

A Short History of Dynamic Films

Dynamic Films was established in April of 2004 by filmmaker Armand Gazarian. Prior to starting the company, Armand worked as a writer, producer, director and cinematographer on a number high-profile feature films and television shows for producers like Howard Stern, Drew Carey and Damon Wayans. A passion for advertising and extensive experience managing the productions for major companies like Time Warner Media, drove us to start our own advertising agency.

We started by primarily producing commercial for our clients and other agencies. Soon we became a full service ad agency and expanded our service to include local and nationwide media planning.

What we quickly learned is that the secret to television advertising lies in two areas:

1) A clear message

2) Repetition.

Having strong ties with Spectrum Reach (formerly Time Warner) we began to negotiate low rates for our clients so that we could get our clients the repetition they need for their campaign to be effective.

We tapped into all available resources not readily available to other agencies who had no knowledge of the inner workings of a giant media machine like Spectrum Reach. We ensured that our clients maximized their exposure by providing opportunities for them to get massive repetition.

And then we saw miracles happen: Massive growth. Some of our clients told us their business grew by 700 percent within a short 18-month period.

We decided to go further.

In 2019 we started our own television marketing show called Best of Beverly Hills. Originally this show aired on KSCI LA-18, a small network dedicated to infomercials. As the popularity of the show grew, we decided to find a more high-profile network for our show. In 2021, we signed an agreement with CBS-owned KCAL-9 to feature our program – initially once a month, on the first Saturday of every month and slowly increase the repetition to 4 times per month.

Best of Beverly Hills is offered exclusively through Dynamic Films and is presently one of the most efficient, cost-effective TV programs that can reach over 5.5 million viewers in Southern California. Every episode begins with a message from our dear friend Todd Johnson, the President and CEO of the Beverly Hills Chamber of commerce.

Our goal with Best of Beverly Hills is to help our clients flourish. Besides the direct marketing we do on the show, we also create unique cross-promotion marketing opportunities for our clients.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires certain businesses to make necessary changes and improvements to their websites for individuals with disabilities. The ADA applies to all government agencies and privately run companies or  non-profit organizations with 15 or more employees operating for the benefit of the general public. As a company or nonprofit organization, it is important to educate yourself and ensure that your website is ADA-compliant and accessible to all website users, including individuals with disabilities and visual or hearing impairments.

Learn how to make your website useful for all users and better understand the issues that users with disabilities may face, with the following guidelines and suggestions for how to improve your website for accessibility. While physical accommodations have been highlighted by the ADA, there are also many extended guidelines and requirements for ensuring that website content is accessible to all users.

This essentially means that certain businesses with public websites or ecommerce sites need to make improvements to text, font, text sizes, or screen readers and alternative assistance technology.

For instance, an exceptionally accessible website has an informative UI/UX with user-friendly features such as text and videos, closed captioning, and alternative modifications to make content more accessible to individuals who are blind, deaf, or often navigate content by voice or other assistive and alternative technologies.

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines

Common standards for web content accessibility are known as The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines or WCAG. The U.S. Department of Justice essentially oversees and manages the ADA requirements often referring to and citing recommendations from WCAG as a guide for web content standards for public websites.

In January 2018, new federal regulations went into effect making all federal institutions’ websites required to meet AA compliance on all items in WCAG 2.0. The WCAG 2.0 is considered to be a technical standard that offers content producers ADA website-compliant standard guidelines and criteria to measure the usability and accessibility of websites using the P.O.U.R. approach: Is your website Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, and Robust?

How To Make Websites Accessible to All

The ADA has compiled a helpful toolkit that businesses should consider reviewing to help ensure their website(s) are accessible. The ADA considers and defines website accessibility as having the following elements: webpage, website, web browser, html, screen reader (computer program that speaks written text), html tags, “longdesc” tag, refreshable Braille display, among other features for accessibility and usability.

Below is a list of general website problems and issues compiled by the ADA that may pose a barrier to individuals with disabilities:

• images without text equivalents
• documents not posted in an accessible format
• specifying colors and font sizes
• videos and other multimedia lack accessible features

It’s important that your business identifies any other additional barriers that may exist for individuals with disabilities when it comes to website accessibility. Here are some ways to improve your website, according to the ADA:

• Write a call-out asking for user input on how accessibility can be improved.
• Keep in mind that if you are making content changes, you will have to also make text and image changes to match new images in the “alt tags.”
• Make sure that your staff is trained and up-to-date with the latest ADA-compliant rules.
• Reach out to disability rights organizations that can provide feedback to the services or content provided on your website.

The Future of Food

Following the devastation of Hurricane Maria in 2017, Chef José Andrés served over 3.3 million meals to communities in Puerto Rico in collaboration with World Central Kitchen and #ChefsforPuertoRico. With his experience creating World Central Kitchen, a non-profit that provides solutions to hunger and poverty by empowering communities and strengthening economies through food, he emphasized that contributing to charities is not about the donors, but about helping those in need. José Andrés reminded the audience to invest wisely in charities that will make a return on their investment.

On the other hand, innovation drives Chef Curtis Stone’s business since he challenges himself and the rest of the competition by not doing what everyone else has done. Taking chances with business also requires taking chances on other people, shown by his partnership with Chrysalis, an organization that helps the formerly incarcerated and homeless find jobs.

In planning for the opening of Tesse Restaurant as well as her own food creations, Chef Sally Camacho Mueller actively chooses to use available resources that are local, in season, and sustainable. She innovates with food by pulling inspiration from her Filipino-American background and her French cuisine training to create cultural experiences that introduce new flavors to others. It is important to remember that, what is ordinary to one person can be new to another.

Virtual Medicine

Technology has always advanced medicine, so Dr. Brennan Spiegel is pioneering the practice of utilizing virtual reality as a treatment in the hospital that goes beyond the limited capabilities of pills. Virtual reality (VR) is an immersive, realistic experience that allows users to interact with a simulated environment. So far, 2,500 patients have used VR as a treatment at Cedar-Sinai.

Spiegel admitted that hospital rooms tend to become a “social jail cell” in which patients are isolated and can suffer physically, emotionally, and socially. VR remedies this by transporting these people outside of their hospital rooms to places where they can swim with dolphins or gallop with horses, all by wearing goggles and a headset. Patients who use VR to manage their pain forget their discomfort during and after interacting with VR. According to the gate control theory, VR acts to send positive signals to the brain to interfere with the negative, painful sensations. Another theory, the spotlight theory of attention, states that since the brain is only able to concentrate on so many things at once, VR can overwhelm the brain with positive experiences and render it incapable of detecting pain coming from the body. Although VR has the capacity to help many people and serve as therapy, it can also cause harm and trigger emotional responses such as panic attacks. Therefore, Spiegel introduced the idea of a “virtualist;” a medical professional whose job is to tailor and prescribe the proper virtual reality treatments to most effectively help patients.

A New Era of Entertainment

Rob Dyrdek built his own brand at the age of 18 and, with years of industry experience, continues to develop his business. He stresses the importance of being selective with ideas and businesses since trying to predict consumer behavior is a slippery slope that always has potential to lead to failure. Therefore, Rob emphasizes that companies must decide their target audience and then create with their audience in mind. Regardless of the entertainment platform, the quality content naturally rises to the top.

Roy Taylor has always been pushing the boundaries of technology in entertainment. His latest projects use technology to capture faces and recreate them photo-realistically into a computer-generated image. This implies that actors may eventually be able to act in their day to day outfits, and everything from their makeup to their background is computer generated. This has its own ethical implications because this technology enables a user to make anyone photorealistically say anything. Taylor commented that the “future is accelerating” and science fiction is shortening as the gap between the imagining science fiction and it becoming reality continues to get smaller. From an executive standpoint, Ellen Pittleman noted that the big businesses that used to be the gatekeepers of entertainment are no longer innovating. The individual has become more powerful in producing, innovating, and distributing content as the landscape for traditional movie-going and television-watching continues to transform. Reiterating Dyrdek’s comments, Pittleman emphasized the importance of identifying the consumer and fan base in order to best meet their demands.
