We focus on fostering a community of understanding and resilience, helping individuals to not only cope with their challenges but to thrive.

We utilize a variety of programs and activities designed to inspire and motivate our clients. Through workshops, mentorship programs, community events, and PARTY (Play Amusements Recreation Tune stay Young), we provide practical tools and emotional support. We emphasize the importance of basic friendly cordiality in all interactions, as kindness and understanding can make a significant difference in the lives of those we serve.

To illustrate the power of resilience and determination, we often draw on historical and contemporary figures who have overcome tremendous adversity. For instance:

• Harriet Tubman: Despite suffering from epilepsy herself, Tubman escaped slavery and became a leading abolitionist, helping hundreds of enslaved people gain their freedom via the Underground Railroad.
• Julius Caesar: Known for his political acumen and military prowess, Caesar is believed to have had epilepsy. His leadership and strategic brilliance have left a lasting legacy.
• Socrates: The ancient philosopher faced numerous personal challenges, yet his teachings have profoundly influenced Western thought.

As the organization approaches its 30th anniversary, the IMF’s reach extends to more than 525,000 members in 140 countries worldwide.

According to the National Cancer Institute’s SEER program, an estimated 32,110 new cases of multiple myeloma will be diagnosed in the U.S. in 2019 alone. Currently, an estimated 124,733 people are living with myeloma in the U.S., and globally, nearly 160,000 new cases are projected to be diagnosed within the year. Additionally, multiple myeloma is the second most common blood cancer in the world. The IMF is working to their mission with their four founding principles: Research, Education, Support, and Advocacy.

The IMF leads the charge in the search for a cure with its signature research program the Black Swan Research Initiative® (BSRI). The BSRI is a multi-faceted program comprised of the world’s leading multiple myeloma experts whose mission is the prevention, treatment, and cure for multiple myeloma. The BSRI’s myeloma prevention initiative, Iceland Screens Treats or Prevents Multiple Myeloma® (iStopMM), is the world’s largest myeloma prevention-focused study. To date, the study has tested more than 50,000 participants blood samples over the age of 40, performed approximately 900 bone marrow tests, and has begun potential early intervention therapy for participants with pre-myeloma markers.

To encourage a dynamic and proactive approach to raising awareness, the IMF declared March as “Myeloma Action Month.” The initiative empowers patients living with the disease, their loved ones, and their healthcare providers to take actions that save lives. These Myeloma Warriors work to raise awareness for multiple myeloma on a global scale.

On April 2, 2019, the Vrije Universiteit Brussels (VUB) awarded Susie Durie and Brian G.M. Durie, MD, a joint honorary doctorate for scientific excellence. The VUB recognized the worldwide impact the IMF has created through the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities, along with its dedication to inform, involve, and educate myeloma patients.

“Trauma teams and medical personnel take preparation seriously,” says Dr. Daniel R. Margulies, director of Trauma-Emergency Surgery and Surgical Critical Care at Cedars-Sinai. “The hospitals, emergency rooms, and trauma teams in Las Vegas—like those across the country—regularly train for this kind of incident. We drill, we practice, and we’re always looking for ways to improve.”

In situations like October’s Las Vegas shooting, in which a gunman fired into a crowd at an outdoor music festival killing at least 58 people and wounding more than 500 more, the people present at such an incident can make all the difference.

“The real first responders are the members of the public who are on site,” Dr. Margulies says. “They can make the difference between life and death.”

“It’s important that the people who are there know how to help with injuries, and that mostly has to do with controlling the bleeding,” he says. “We have to teach the public, in the same way we have with CPR and other first aid, how to help in these situations.”

Margulies points to a national campaign called Stop the Bleed, which aims to better prepare the public to save lives by raising awareness of how to stop life-threatening bleeding following emergencies and disasters. From that, the American College of Surgeons and Hartford Consensus created bleedingcontrol.org to provide diagrams, videos, and other resources to help teach people how to stop bleeding.

The campaign prompted trauma centers nationwide, including Cedars-Sinai, to host “Stop the Bleed” teaching events and work with arenas, other venues, and the general public to train them how to stop bleeding. The website provides some basic tips on how to stop the bleed.

How to stop bleeding

• Ensure your own safety first and call 911. Just like they tell you on an airplane to put on your own mask before helping the person next to you, make sure you’re safe before you offer help to someone who is injured. If your safety is threatened while you’re helping, try to get yourself—and the injured person, if possible—to a safe location.
• Look for life-threatening bleeding. Find the source of the bleeding, and open or remove clothing if necessary to see the injury. Bleeding is likely to be serious if blood is spurting from the wound, blood won’t stop coming, blood is pooling on the ground, clothing or bandages are soaked in blood, part or all of a limb is lost, or the victim is confused or unconscious.
• Compress and control. The thing all methods for stopping bleeding have in common: The blood vessel must be compressed to stop the bleed. This can be done by applying direct pressure on the wound using a bandage and clean cloth or a tourniquet. The website provides more details on what to do to do if you have a first aid kit—or if you don’t.

Other ways to help in an emergency or disaster: Give blood, know other basic first aid, and be prepared.

One last word of advice from Dr. Margulies: If you experience a serious injury, go to a trauma center. When it comes to serious trauma, like a gunshot wound, stab wound, or blunt force trauma from an automobile collision, getting to the people best trained to handle your injury first can be a matter of life and death.

“Don’t go to just any hospital,” Dr. Margulies says. “Find a trauma center.”

The American College of Surgeons provides a searchable list of trauma centers, so you can find the one nearest your home or anywhere you’re visiting in the US.

Imagine if you could take the IMAX movie experience to create a 3D surgical experience? With June being Cataract Awareness Month, we decided to bring you a second installment featuring this exciting surgical advancement and its applications to other types of surgeries.

Cataract surgery (removing and replacing the eye’s opaque internal lens), is the most common elective procedure performed in the United States. With 3D surgical, the benefits to the surgeon and ultimately, the patient is significant.

3D Platform Surgical Advantages:

• Enhanced three-dimensionality (3D), thus the “IMAX experience” – Just as the theater going audience appreciates the viewing superiority of 3D movies, so too does the surgeon appreciate having an enhanced 3D view that opens the door for even better results when operating on a complex structure like the human eye.
• The traditional surgical microscope’s view of the eye is greatly magnified (appears even larger than a beach ball) allowing the surgeon to see even the smallest details of the eye while also increasing the depth of field (range from front to back of the eye that remains simultaneously in focus). This too adds to the ability to perform more precise surgery.
• The system can also create an enhanced contrast of different eye structures to further improve the surgeon’s ability to see detail.
• As the surgeon is seated in a much more comfortable position throughout the surgery (viewing the eye on a massive screen, while wearing 3D glasses), body posture is improved vs. the previous confines of peering through an operating microscope. This posture supports an improved surgical experience.
• The rest of the surgical team also gains an advantage from the superior viewing experience, thus translating into optimal team communication.

The future direction of digital surgery is exciting. Dr. Assil began developing this technology for the purpose of improving cataract surgery. But not everyone cleans their windows at the same time and some tolerate it longer than others. You certainly don’t have to live with the decreased vision and can achieve clearer vision with little or no downtime. In addition, you can get rid of your glasses for nearly everything you enjoy. The lifestyle liberation of reading, exercising, golfing, driving, or riding your bike without glasses is very empowering.

Thanks to ongoing advances in technology and insights, when properly performed, cataract surgery is now one of the world’s safest treatments and the most commonly performed surgery in the United States. More than 50% of Americans now have cataract surgery by the age of 80, with more than 3 million procedures performed each year in the US alone.

These variable symptoms are the direct result of how the lens opacities influence light transmission into the eye. If the opacities are uniform and block the incoming light evenly, then more light is needed (like seeing through tinted glasses). Alternatively, if the opacities are spaced apart within the lens, then the incoming light gets scattered off of them and creates glare (from bright lights). When viewed through a specialized microscope, a doctor can see both the extent and location of these lens opacities.

The Assil Eye Institute is proud to have been at the forefront of Cataract surgery for over half a century. The pioneering efforts date back to the Institute’s Dr. Robert Sinskey in the late 60’s and early 70’s who contributed greatly to the development of using ultrasound to liquefy and remove cataracts through a tiny, self-sealing opening and replacing the clouded lens with a crystal clear synthetic lens.

To further contribute to the field in improving patient outcomes and considering patient goals, we also introduced:

• Cold Ultrasound (White Star)
• Premium Intraocular Lenses to reduce or eliminate the need for both distance and reading glasses in each eye. These lenses can also treat astigmatism which are distortions caused by a warpage in the eye’s focusing mechanisms.
• Use of space age technology (Ora- Intraoperative Aberrometer) to measure the eye’s power during surgery in real time. This approach further refines the selected lens power (after the cataract has been removed) and allows us to adjust to the eye’s optical warpage (treating astigmatism).
• Laser Cataract Surgery (Lensar Femtosecond laser), whereby the cataract is pre-softened by a laser, prior to entering the operating room, for much more ease in surgery.
• Lasik surgery, to further sharpen vision if needed.
