Each year business executives, residents, civic leaders, and community supporters of Beverly Hills gather on a special occasion to witness the State of the City Address given by the current mayor of the City of Beverly Hills. This year, the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce members and guests had the privilege of welcoming Mayor Julian Gold M.D. to the Greystone Mansion Formal Gardens for the annual An Evening with the Mayor: State of the City Address. Hosted on the grounds of Greystone, an iconic Beverly Hills estate, the elegant evening did not disappoint.

Attendees arrived to the mansion at 5pm on Starline Tours of Hollywood shuttle busses and were greeted by two luxury sports cars from O’Gara Coach Beverly Hills. Over 400 guests listened to live music from Kirschner Creative Artists’ world-renowned Sasha Boldachev, while enjoying hors d’oeuvres provided by Crateful Catering, delicious dessert from Gelato-go and an assortment of beverages from buzzbox, Morandell Imports, and Boisset Collection.

After the delightful cocktail reception, guests were directed to the formal gardens to listen to the highly anticipated official State of the City Address presented by the City of Beverly Hills Mayor, Julian Gold, M.D. Beverly Hills Chamber President & CEO Todd Johnson opened and welcomed the crowd. Charles L Black III, the 18’-19’ Chairman of the Board of Directors, introduced Mayor Julian Gold, M.D. to the stage.

In Mayor Julian Gold, M.D.’s formal address, he touched on some financial figures, stating that the city’s fiscal state is strong and that the city is having a fantastic year. He mentioned innovative initiatives such as Beverly Hills Fiber, summer BOLD and the Blue Ribbon Strategic Committee, which he began during his current term. He further discussed the NEXT Beverly Hills committee which he started three years ago as well. The purpose of NEXT Beverly Hills is to engage and advocate for the younger generation of Beverly Hills which has had increasing contributions to the community. With only six months left of his mayoral term, Gold stated that he is energized and inspired by residents and businesses of the City of Beverly Hills and will work with them to create a shared vision for the future.

Winner of the Best of Beverly Hills Golden Palm Awards – The Fred Hayman Visionary Award

The Honorable Lili Bosse is the inaugural recipient of the Fred Hayman Visionary Award which will be presented by Robert Hayman on October 15, 2018 at the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce’s Best of Beverly Hills Golden Palm Awards Gala. Lili Bosse served two terms as the Mayor of the City of Beverly Hills in 2014-2015 and again in 2017-2018. Her first term in 2014-2015 was a milestone year for Beverly Hills as the City was celebrating its 100th birthday. She is currently an active member of the City Council. During her time as Mayor, she led an initiative to bring further vibrancy, excitement, and nightlife to Beverly Hills. She achieved this by launching BOLD Beverly Hills (Beverly Hills Open Later Days).

BOLD Beverly Hills is a program that began through the vision of Mayor Lili Bosse during her second term in 2017-2018. She spearheaded this program by bringing together stakeholder groups from around the community to achieve a BOLD BH vision. Major stakeholders that were involved and came together in support of BOLD Beverly Hills included: City of Beverly Hills, Beverly Hills Conference and Visitors Bureau, Rodeo Drive Committee, and the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce. This program aimed to bring together the Beverly Hills community during extended evenings of shopping and dining with the backdrop of live entertainment and unique art installations.

At the 2017 Best of Beverly Hills Golden Palm Awards, the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce presented the Legacy Award in Memory of Fred Hayman for his incredible vision of Rodeo Drive and the Beverly Hills community. This year, Lili Bosse will be named as the first recipient of the esteemed Fred Hayman Visionary Award. The Fred Hayman Visionary Award is bestowed upon an individual that has made an extremely positive impact on the Beverly Hills community; has a reputation in the community of being an enthusiastic, out-of-the-box thinker with outstanding follow through; and has a long-term vision as well as the drive, focus, and perseverance to deliver and bring people together to achieve that vision. Lili Bosse embodies all of these characteristics and more through the BOLD program.

BOLD was not the first vision Lili Bosse had for Beverly Hills. During her first term in 2014-2015, Lili Bosse announced her Beverly Hills Healthy City Initiative. Mayor Bosse led the public on walks throughout Beverly Hills as part of her “Monday Walks with the Mayor” program. When she was re-elected in March 2017, Bosse renewed her weekly Walks with the Mayor program and she continued to walk with the public through March 2018. The 2018 Monday Walks with the Mayor gathered between 200 and 400 community members weekly and visited 80 separate Beverly Hills businesses. These events also showed the public a more approachable face of local government as they allowed for a casual platform to discuss issues that mattered to the community.

Bosse continues to be an active member of the Beverly Hills community, serving on the City Council and focusing on enhanced quality of life for residents, budget sustainability for the future of Beverly Hills, and more transparency in city government. Celebrate this tremendous honor on October 15, 2018 at Montage Beverly Hills from 6 – 9 PM.
The evening kicked-off with remarks by the outgoing Chairwoman of the Board, Jennifer Kullmann as she spoke about the many accomplishments of the 2017-2018 year. Following the Certificate of Recognition Ceremony led by Mayor Julian Gold, M.D., Charles L. Black III was inducted as 97th Chairman of the Board of Directors. Mr. Black then addressed the audience with remarks on what his major focuses would be during his term. Here is what he said:

“Beverly Hills is my community. It is a place where I have always felt welcomed by its people and inspired by its success. I have always felt personally responsible for helping to facilitate business relationships here. It is in my experience, that these relationships are made and fostered within our Chamber membership and should go far beyond transactional. For this reason, my primary focus will be on member retention through increased member satisfaction and a focused and strategic return on the investment of your membership dollars. I wholeheartedly believe that the incentive to maintain your membership should always outweigh the cost.

If you’re not yet a member of the Chamber and are considering joining, or aren’t seeing the results you desire in your business and would like to know more about next steps, please connect with me. I would be glad to spend some time with you personally to provide guidance and support.

We are so fortunate to do business in this amazing city, which has a brand that is recognized worldwide. There is no reason that we shouldn’t be best in class in all of our marketing initiatives. My secondary focus will be to continue to drive and elevate our marketing efforts. Social media dominance within the Chamber world has been a focus of ours for a few years now and we will soon be the #1 performing Chamber as it relates to social media engagement on all platforms; which in turn, provides a tremendous benefit to our members…especially our small business owners. Furthermore, I look forward to refining our newsletter and increasing its reach, as well as increasing web traffic to our dedicated Chamber site for the benefit of our members.

I had lunch with Mayor Gold recently as I wanted a first-hand account of the key initiatives for his term, which include supporting the Next Beverly Hills Committee, The Commercial Space and Business Attraction Strategic Group, the BOLD Initiative and the Small Business Task Force. It should be no surprise that the following slogan came to mind: “Stay in the Black as we mine for Gold”. As corny as that may sound, I am dedicated to working with Mayor Gold to do just that.

I leave you with my personal mantra, as it also relates to my leadership this year, ‘To add value to others, one must first value others,’ John Maxwell.”

The rest of evening the crowd celebrated with music by Quist & Trip and delicious and decadent bites and beverages from area restaurants and businesses.

Thank you to each and every sponsor, staff and crew member, Board of Director, Chamber Ambassador, and all of our volunteers for making the evening go so seamlessly. Special thanks to all of our event sponsors who made the night possible, including: Eldridge Industries; Mercedes-Benz of Beverly Hills; Torrey Pines Bank; Compass Real Estate; MCE Checkin; Montage Beverly Hills; Cedars-Sinai Health Systems; JLL Brokerage; Moon Valley Landscape Design Center; and Kirschner Creative Artists, as well as these reception sponsors: Bombay Palace; Comoncy; Coral Tree Café; M Café; Ocean Prime Beverly Hills; Sharky’s Woodfired Mexican Grill; Via Alloro; AsomBroso Tequila, buzzbox premium cocktails; and Morandell Imports.

$30,000 raised for the Beverly Hills Education Foundation

On Friday, May 11th at 10:00 a.m. the Beverly Hills 5K Committee presented a check to the Beverly Hills Education Foundation. The $30,000 check benefits the students in the Beverly Hills School District and is just the beginning of the fundraising effort. The monies were raised on January 28th at the Beverly Hills 5K Run Walk & Fitness Blast.

“We are thrilled to announce that the net proceeds to BHEF were $30,000. So proud for that final number to come through and for the amount to exceed our originally predicted number of $25,000,” said Celebrity Trainer and Fitness Philanthropist Dion Jackson.

Jackson’s company, All Seasons Fitness Media, partnered with Run Racing (local race management organization), the City and the Beverly Hills Education Foundation to make this happen. As a first year event, there was a learning curve and many upstart costs but, in the end, generous donations from sponsors and community members brought the total to $30,000.

“From top to bottom so many people came forward to ensure success starting with the Mayor, the BHEF, and our major Sponsors Mercedes Benz, First Republic Bank, Lili and Jon Bosse Family Foundation, Nespresso and Beverly Hills Courier,” said Jackson.

Because the event was a USA Track and Field Sanctioned Event the details were very important. From the race route to the road closures and from the timing chip in the bibs to the singing of the national anthem no detail was spared. Many local organizations like the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce, The Beverly Hills Firefighters Association, the Beverly Hills Historical Society, and the L.A. Galaxy really came out in support.

“I was impressed that so many organizations took time to see this event succeed. Todd Johnson from the Chamber, Chief Gregory Barton from the Beverly Hills Fire Department, Phil Savenick from the BH Historical Society and the Star Squad from the L.A. Galaxy all added a special touch to the event, “ said emcee and All Seasons Fitness Media team member, Troy Titus-Barrow. The Chamber pounded the pavement to bring in sponsorships and city support and the firefighters brought on-site fun with their old-fashioned trucks and a fire engine to hoist the American flag over the route. The BH Historical Society did a silent auction and decorated many of the booths with historical backdrops that told a story of the city’s early years. Local hotels like the Montage and the Waldorf Astoria supported sponsor packages with hotel gift certificates and the Waldorf Astoria even brought chair massage to the event which was a nice pick me up for attendees. The L.A. Galaxy anchored the Kid’s Zone with a Soccer Goal Kick and local Self Defense Studio, Z Ultimate came out to get the kid’s involved and TEEN BHEF stepped into power many parts of the event.

Rodeo Drive was celebrated for its more than 50 years of luxury on February 25 in what was an unforgettable, block party extravaganza!

The Runway to Rodeo celebration kicked off at 4pm. Beverly Hills Mayor Lili Bosse, along with hosts Rob Zangardi and Lilian Babaian, welcomed an incredible crowd to what would soon become an iconic event in the history of Beverly Hills, CA.

The 200 and 300 blocks were transformed into a lively, golden experience that captured the luxury of Rodeo Drive for the public to commemorate. Starting at the intersection of Brighton Way and Rodeo Dr., an alignment of food trucks was stationed and ready for the public to indulge in quality gourmet food upon purchase. The Original Chicken and Rice Company, Son Of A Bun, and Border Grill were only a few of the many food trucks serving at the event. Right before Dayton Way, you could make a stop at the fabulous champagne garden to enjoy a glass of champagne and mingle with the community. In addition, you could have a celebrity status moment by posing for a photo in front of a red carpet inspired backdrop and studio lights.

Let’s talk about the exclusive art installations. Bizbash’s award-winning #ONLYONRODEO infinity room had a long line of people who were excited to take a photo or boomerang that soon surfaced social media pages. It was a three-dimensional mirrored room with gold accents for a lavish moment before the lens. Even more, the public had the opportunity to travel back to the 1970s and relive the evolution of Rodeo Drive at the art museum installed around Robert Graham’s iconic artwork, “Torso.” Black and white photographs were displayed against a green hedge and illuminated with floor spot lights, telling the story of how the world-renowned fashion and shopping district came to be.

Adding liveliness to the celebration was Gavyn Rhone and his band’s live musical performance, covering popular songs like “Superstition”, “Shake Your Body”, “Blurred Lines,” and “Uptown Funk” among many others. Their groovy beats and contagious energy had everyone get on their feet and dance the night away, setting a vibrant and glamorous atmosphere.

Last but not least, a spectacular towering cake made Rodeo Drive’s more than 50 years of luxury official. Nahid Parsa of the French cake boutique La Patisserie Artistique in Beverly Hills, designed this one of a kind cake specially for this grand event. After guiding everyone in singing Happy Birthday to Rodeo Drive, Mayor Lili Bosse did the honors of performing the cutting of the cake. She also took the opportunity to commend Giorgios, the first luxury boutique to open the show—to walk the runway to Rodeo—in 1961.

Today, Rodeo Drive is a world-class shopping destination that attracts a multitude of visitors from around the world with its incomparable hospitality and continued tradition of luxury fashion. From retailers like Chanel to Louis Vuitton to Ralph Lauren, Rodeo Drive is the ultimate location that transmits an essence of luxury, dazzle, and glamour.

The Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce advocates on behalf of local business community through the Government Affairs Committee (GAC). This group is exclusive to Chamber members and meets to address important issues such as: urban planning, transportation, real estate development, construction, taxation, and regional legislation that impact the business community.
This month’s meeting addressed the often-misunderstood issue of “Net Neutrality.” The GAC heard perspectives from both sides of the debate over the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) recent changes to existing net neutrality rules from two Professors from the University of Southern California, Mark Lloyd and Milan Miric.

Mark Lloyd is a clinical professor of communication, teaching in both the Communication School and Journalism School. From 2009-2012 he served as the associate general counsel and chief diversity officer at the Federal Communications Commission, advising the Commission on how to promote diverse participation in the communication field. Professor Lloyd spoke in favor of net neutrality.

Milan Miric is an assistant professor of Data Science and Operations at the USC Marshal School of Business. He has researched and written extensively on both digital innovation and competition for marketplace attention with ties to net neutrality and platform availability. Professor Miric spoke in favor of the recent FCC decision repealing rules on net neutrality.

Net neutrality is the principle that internet service should enable access to all content and application regardless of the source, and without favoring or blocking particular products or websites. A 2015 FCC Ruling Classified Internet Service Providers (ISPs) as “Common Carriers” which prohibited blocking, throttling, and paid prioritization; a recent 2017 FCC decision repealed this policy. Professor Lloyd argued that the current repeal of net neutrality is primarily based on partisan politics and could negatively impact access to content. Professor Miric believed that this repeal might improve competition but there are other factors that would need to be considered. Professor Miric used a pipeline analogy to describe the relationship between ISPs and content providers; ISPs control the pipeline that the content providers use to reach consumers. Professors Miric and Lloyd both believe it is too soon to determine the long-term effects of the FCC’s policy on the marketplace. Two factors that need to be considered which would impact the ruling are related regulations and who we as a society want to be the gatekeeper of the “pipelines.”
